DR. MUNA AL-KHAIFI

Dr. Muna Al-Khaifi brings expertise in cancer survivorship, supportive and precision care, breast health, menopause and sexual health after cancer, and medical education to speaking, educational, and advisory initiatives.

Through her work in academic medicine, clinical care, research, and education, she advances evidence-informed, patient-centred, and efficient approaches to cancer care that support people during treatment and throughout survivorship. Her work focuses on long-term and late treatment effects, sexual and psychosocial wellbeing, surveillance, rehabilitation, health promotion, and coordinated transitions between oncology and primary care.

A strong advocate for accessible, integrated, and personalized survivorship care, Dr. Al Khaifi translates emerging evidence into practical strategies that strengthen clinical practice, empower patients, and improve continuity and quality of care.

She is available for keynote presentations, invited lectures, conference panels, workshops, webinars, educational programs, advisory committees, and strategic consultation with healthcare institutions, professional societies, academic programs, patient organizations, and research initiatives.

Dr. Al Khaifi collaborates with academic institutions, healthcare systems, professional societies, research networks, patient organizations, industry partners, and educational programs seeking expertise in cancer survivorship, breast health, supportive care, menopause and sexual health after cancer, medical education, and health equity.

Her work spans clinical care, research, education, knowledge translation, and health system improvement, with a focus on translating emerging evidence into meaningful improvements in care for people living with and beyond cancer.

Provides specialized survivorship care for individuals affected by breast, gastrointestinal, colorectal, skin, and other cancers, bringing a broad clinical perspective to the increasingly complex needs of people living with and beyond cancer.

Her practice sees patients across the cancer care continuum, including breast diagnostics, cancer survivorship, menopause and sexual health after cancer, management of persistent and late treatment effects, health promotion, and long term supportive care.

Brings experience developing and leading models of care that strengthen connections between oncology, primary care, rehabilitation, and supportive care, with an emphasis on coordinated, accessible, and patient centred survivorship.

Advocates for a model of survivorship that extends beyond cancer surveillance to recognize physical health, psychological wellbeing, sexual health, functional recovery, lifestyle, prevention, cultural context, and quality of life.

As an Assistant Professor and educator in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto, Dr. Al Khaifi develops educational initiatives that prepare physicians to address the growing and increasingly complex needs of cancer survivors in primary care.

Developed a cancer survivorship curriculum incorporating didactic teaching, online modules, patient as teacher sessions, physician facilitated discussions, and structured reflection. Her educational model emphasizes not only clinical knowledge but also empathy, communication, self awareness, cultural humility, and understanding the lived experience of cancer.

Serves as Co Lead of the MASCC Survivorship Webinar Series, contributing to the development of an international educational initiative in cancer survivorship, including its strategic direction, programming, multidisciplinary collaboration, and webinar development.

Created Guides for Primary Care Providers in Breast Cancer Survivorship, translating oncology and survivorship evidence into practical resources that clinicians can apply in everyday practice.

Develops and delivers patient facing webinars, educational resources, and community programming designed to make complex survivorship information understandable, practical, and accessible.

Has collaborated with patient and community organizations, including Wellspring Cancer Support Foundation, After Breast Cancer, and the Ontario Lymphedema Association, to support education and awareness surrounding cancer survivorship and its long term effects.

Places patient partnership and lived experience at the centre of her educational work. Her survivorship curriculum incorporates cancer survivors as patient teachers, allowing residents to learn directly from patients about the emotional, physical, social, and healthcare challenges that continue beyond active cancer treatment.

An active clinician researcher with more than 35 peer reviewed publications and a growing portfolio of national and international research focused on cancer survivorship, supportive care, breast health, sexual health, rehabilitation, medical education, and emerging models of cancer care.

Serves as Principal Investigator and Site Principal Investigator across multiple clinical trials and research programs, including studies examining cancer rehabilitation, chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy, sexual health among breast cancer survivors, time restricted eating in cancer survivors, and innovative approaches to detecting metastatic breast cancer recurrence.

Contributes to major externally funded research, including a 2026 Canadian Institutes of Health Research grant for supporting a Type 1 Hybrid Effectiveness Implementation Trial of a virtual exercise based rehabilitation intervention for persistent chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy.

Serves as Principal Investigator of the EINSTEIN TNBC Trial, a multicentre pilot randomized trial investigating liquid biopsy and imaging for the detection of metastatic recurrence among individuals with Stage II or III triple negative breast cancer, supported through the Sunnybrook Medical Services AFP Innovation Fund.

Leads research examining important and evolving areas of survivorship, including sexual health after breast cancer, vasomotor symptoms, early integration of survivorship into personalized cancer care, and how individuals receiving oncology care perceive survivorship terminology.

Her research in medical education includes the development and evaluation of a multisite, patient centred cancer survivorship curriculum for Family Medicine residents at the University of Toronto. The program combines didactic learning with patient led discussions and physician guided reflection and has demonstrated improvements in residents’ confidence and awareness across important areas of survivorship care.

Leads and participates in research extending beyond Canada, including serving as Principal Investigator for the EORTC Survivorship Development Module, Phase 4, involving approximately 150 international centres.

Leads international research examining healthcare professionals’ attitudes and perceptions regarding artificial intelligence in supportive cancer care, reflecting her interest in how emerging technologies can be responsibly integrated into patient centred survivorship care.

Contributes to international scholarship as a Guest Editor for Current Oncology for Beyond Cancer: Enhancing Quality of Life for Cancer Survivors and has led special issue initiatives bringing together international authors and experts in breast cancer and survivorship.

Through involvement with organizations including the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer and the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer, contributes to multidisciplinary and international efforts to advance the science and delivery of survivorship and supportive care.

Founded and led the Breast Cancer Survivorship Program at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, developing a comprehensive approach to addressing the long term needs of individuals following breast cancer treatment.

Serves as Co Chair of the Ontario Health Cancer Survivorship Quality Standards, contributing to the development of provincial standards aimed at advancing consistent, evidence based, equitable, and patient centred survivorship care.

Served as Conference Chair of the inaugural Breast Cancer Survivorship and Supportive Care International Conference, an initiative supported by educational funding and organized in collaboration with Continuing Professional Development at the University of Toronto. The conference brought together multidisciplinary expertise to advance evidence based approaches to breast cancer survivorship and supportive care.

Has secured and contributed to research, innovation, medical education, and unrestricted educational funding supporting clinical research, survivorship program development, professional education, and patient resources.
